LINUX - OPERATING SYSTEM OF THE FUTURE?
All the major computer manufacturers are investing very heavily in this Public Owned operating system we are told. The major attraction is that LINUX is Publicly Owned, there are no variants. There are standards that new items of software for this system must comply with, and all contributors seem to be happy to comply with these standards. LINUX is considered to be a secure operating system that will not be attractive to hackers, since they are in effect part owners.
Online readers of this newsletter will be able to see the IBM presentation on this subject. Due to some collaboration between Sage, IBM and ISTUG attendees at our September meeting had the opportunity to try out Sage Line 500 software running under LINUX on an I-Series Server. Its general look and feel were exactly what would be expected. Sage is now porting to LINUX as already reported.

THE IBM I-Series SERVERS
These rather dull looking black boxes that sit quietly in the corner have more going for them than their looks. The I-Series have been known as AS400 series etc., and offer a good platform for those companies that have outgrown their RS6000 server (now known as P-Series). By all counts they are a very solid and reliable server, with a good track record, and well known for giving a good return on investment.
Configured with Linux, and DB2 as standard, this package offers a very powerful server to existing or potential users of Sage Line 500.
Online readers can view the IBM Presentation on these servers. As already reported above attendees at our September meeting had the opportunity to try this combination for themselves.

A WOW Presentation of Business Objects linked to Sage Data.
Reseller Panacea who have produced the recommended interface to Business Objects, gave a very impressive fast moving presentation of what can be achieved. This presentation requested by RSIG was so popular with all concerned we brought it into the main meeting. It was shown how data from just about anywhere can be brought together into an active report very quickly, and then re-configured and extended just as quickly. If it was pretty reports or sexy online views that were required, all could be delivered. Those familiar with windows drag and drop facilities would have little difficulty in understanding how to drive this tool.
Online readers of this newsletter can view the presentation, the price list and the data sheet for this product.
