FACT - if part of your product packaging or transit packing ends up in the UK waste stream, you may have to recycle a percentage of that waste.Who is responsible for the disposal of waste? - YOU ARE.The Waste Management module introduced by SES was the subject of a talk by Steve Tattum of SES at the recent ISTUG Meeting at IBM Warwick on 6/3/02. The full presentation can be viewed on the News Page in the Members Club area of the ISTUG web site. Do you have an annual turnover of £2 million and handle 50 tonnes or more of packaging each year? Many companies do, and they are required by law to be registered - many according to Steve have still failed to register - are you one of them?ISTUG have put together all the information to help you in one of our Technology Blocks in the Members Club - this includes hot links to the prime web sites, and the ability to look at the presentation material. In the UK, consultations between the Government and the Business Community have led to a "shared producer responsibility"; all parties in the packaging chain contribute towards meeting the recycling target. If any part of the product packaging or transit packaging ends up in the UK waste stream, you may have to recycle a percentage of that waste, in line with the type of activity that you undertake on the packaging. If you don't comply with these regulations you risk incurring fines. There have already been some high profile prosecutions under these regulations such as Garden Centres who have failed to realise that Flower Pots are classified as packing waste. Since coming into force in 1997, regulations on disposing of packing waste are being tightened up even more. Challenging targets now mean that by 2003: DID YOU KNOW - you can return packaging waste to the place where you bought the product, and they are legally obliged to accept it?DID YOU KNOW - Auditors are increasingly refusing to sign off company accounts without the required information on packaging waste being readily available.
IF YOU STILL THINK THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU THINK AGAIN The SES Waste Management module may be a cheaper option than fines of £5000 per offence.
